2019-2020 Summer Reading Initiative

2019 Summer Reading List and Assignments Students should choose one of the following assignments to complete based on the SSYRA book choice below that they select for summer reading. Assignments should be turned into the student’s Language Arts teacher within the first three weeks of school.

  • Create a Google Slides presentation on your book. Create a slide for each of the following: summary of the book; characters; plot diagram/mountain; personal response/critique of the book
  • Write a newspaper article about an event in the story (minimum 300 words). Include a heading and graphics. Write the article to include a character’s perspective/point of view about an event from the book.
  • Create a collage of images/phrases for one of the characters in the book. Entries should summarize events that happened as well as record the character’s feelings about the events.
  • Draw and color a map of the setting of the story. Label the important landmarks of the novel and explain why these are significant.
  • Find two songs that relate to your book. Copy/print/write out the lyrics to both songs. Include a 100 word explanation of how the theme is conveyed through the lyrics or the relationship between the lyrics and a decision the protagonist made.

Books may be checked out through the Orange County Public Library system: https://www.ocls.info or purchased through various vendors, including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. *Students entering 7th or 8th grade during the 2019-2020 school year: Please ask your current Language Arts teacher if you have any questions before school dismisses on May 29. 


OCPS Summer Reading Initiative
The OCPS Summer Reading Initiative is designed to prevent the “summer slide,” which occurs when students who do not read over the summer lose a percentage of the reading skills they developed during the previous school year.

Students, parents, and educators are encouraged to visit OCPSReads.ocps.net to obtain reading lists by grade level and to search for books, apps, interactive literacy websites, e-books, parent resources, and literacy events around town. Students may also access the Beanstack App through Launchpad and can register for the OCPS Summer Reading Challenge through the website. This challenge encourages students to read and log their minutes electronically. This summer we are challenging OCPS students to read 5 million minutes. Our top school and students will be awarded prizes.

The theme this year is “A Universe of Stories...What’s your Story? #OCPSReads”. OCPS Social Media will share the literacy message and encourage families to have students read this summer. We will ask our families to upload pictures and videos using #OCPSReads to share stories about reading, including why they love reading, their favorite book and why, or a quick preview of a book they think everyone should read. We encourage district staff to attend as well. We will fill our social media pages with a love for reading and sharing our universal stories that bring us together.
